Volunteering with us

Shrewsbury Civic Society can only operate by means of volunteers. There are several ways in which people looking to fill their time with some gainful activity can help us. These are listed below – have a look and see what might suit you, and then get in touch with us on 01743 344994 or at shycs2023@gmail.com

Or come and chat with us at the Bear Steps Gallery in St Alkmund’s Place between the hours of 10 am and 4 pm, Monday to Saturday

BECOME A TRUSTEE
The work of the society is overseen by its Council of Management, which is formed by all of its trustees. Our trustees can become involved in many aspects of our work, such as scrutinising planning applications and monitoring the society’s finances

HELP US WITH FUND RAISING
The society receives no funding from either central or local government. This means we rely on our own funding to keep the Bear Steps shop and gallery open. We do this by means of society membership, receiving donations and applying for grants

BECOME A STEWARD FOR THE SHOP
We stock a range of products relating to the society or on behalf of local artists. We need stewards to staff our shop and to support the exhibiting artists. Stewards also assist visitors to the town and help with the management of the shop

HELP US WITH OUR SITE MANAGEMENT
The Bear Steps is a historic building, dating back in part to the 14th century. It is a listed building and needs significant work to maintain it and keep it open to the public free of charge. We need people willing to help us in several different areas

BECOME A COMPUTER OPERATIVE
In the modern age information technology is essential. We have been slowly digitalising our resources and upgrading our IT provision. To help us achieve this we need people with IT knowledge, no matter how basic, or who are willing to learn new skills

WRITE ARTICLES FOR OUR MAGAZINE
We produce a quarterly magazine that informs readers of our latest campaigns and events, informs them of local topics of interests and expands knowledge of local history. We welcome contributions from a wide range of interests and authors

HELP US WITH DATA COLLECTION/ANALYSIS
Data is only useful if it is gathered and then analysed so that we can improve the effectiveness of our provision and understand what our members/clients want. We are always looking for people who might assist us in this vital task

BECOME A NON-TRUSTEE OFFICER
Non-Trustee officers are volunteers who offer their particular expertise in specific areas. These areas might include event organisation, shop display, document archiving, creating promotional materials or advising others in the society

BECOME A RESEARCHER
We run a series of events focused on local issues and history, and we also produce materials for e-books and for presentations. This all requires research and we can use the knowledge of our volunteers to help us produce relevant information

HELP US WITH OUR MEMBERSHIP
The society encourages people to join us as members, and we thus need to communicate with the membership on a regular basis in order to keep them informed. We also need to keep accurate information about our members.

WRITE FOR THE SOCIETY
There is an opportunity to produce books and e-books about the town of Shrewsbury. We are looking to expand the information we have for download or purchase, whether as academic works, guidebooks, pamphlets or other documents

HELP US WITH OUR PUBLICITY
The society arranges several events, organises campaigns and produces material that all require advertising. We also need to make people more aware of aims and objectives, as well as to encourage people to get involved with us

GET INVOLVED WITH A SUBCOMMITTEE
We have two standing committees (planning and finance) and we welcome the participation of interested people. We also have ad hoc committees that look into and produce reports about specific areas or particular issues
